A few thoughts on Flood
Insurance.
One of the most unexpected but
feared disaster is that of a flood. Did you
know that your home, mobile home, and or renters policy does not
cover a flood or damage caused by a flood. Frequently we get
calls in our office for these types of claims and have to advise
our clients that there is no coverage for the damage caused by a
flood.
Flood insurance can be provided
through the National Flood Insurance Program. We write out flood
insurance policies with First Community and Bankers Insurance
Companies. Coverage can be purchased for the dwelling, personal
property mobile homes, and rental dwellings. There are several
deductibles to choose from as well.
Did
you know that one third of all flood insurance claims are filed
from customers who live in "low to moderate" risk areas. Congress
addressed the over bearing burden for property owners in 1968 by
creating the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). This
program assures that property owners can purchase flood insurance
at reasonable costs in exchange for careful management of flood
prone areas by local communities.
Just a couple of facts about
flood insurance:
- Compared to a fire, people
located in a flood plain are 27 times more likely to have a
flood during a typical 30 year mortgage.
- There is a standard thirty
day wait for flood insurance to be in effect. Unless there is a
requirement from a lender on a real-estate closing.
